Hurd Orchards Is The Perfect Fall Escape
If you’re looking for a timeless American fruit farm, a visit to Hurd Orchards in Orleans County will literally feel like a dream. A beloved fall getaway for many Western New Yorkers, the family-owned and operated farm is home to over 40 apple varieties, from old fashioned favorites to newer varieties bred for improved taste and quality. The farm’s owners – Susan Hurd Machamer and her daughter, Amy Hurd Machamer – have truly made Hurd Orchards a premiere destination for all apple-lovers.
Located in Holley, NY, Hurd Orchards prides itself for growing some of the finest fruit land in North America. What’s most striking is the farm’s rich history which began over 200 years ago with a few adventurous settlers who planted some of the first apple trees along Western New York’s countryside.
Describing this year’s SnapDragon production as “remarkable,” Amy Machamer says, “One of the things this year that has been an enormous gift is the tree growth – it is incredible how healthy and nourished the apples appear, being perfectly round, red in color, and juicy. Because there were cooler than normal temperatures this August, the color of the apples is just glowing. It’s as if you’ve hung red Christmas ornaments on every tree. It’s truly been a glorious growing season.”
Amy goes on to explain how SnapDragon has become known for much more than its dazzling and one-of-a-kind flavor. “People of all ages are completely engaged in the fact that SnapDragon is born and bred right here in New York State.”
